How To Play The Marvel Multiverse RPG As A Solo RPG
The Marvel Multiverse RPG is a tabletop role-playing game where the game master (referred to as the Narrator) guides players on adventures through their own version of the Marvel universe. The X-Men Expansion introduced rules for conducting sessions that take place in the Danger Room. The Danger Room is a virtual reality training simulator used by the X-Men.
In the Marvel Multiverse RPG, the Danger Room utilizes random rolling tables to determine obstacles and environment changes. The number of obstacles players must overcome is relative to the number of players playing and the highest rank out of all the players (Rank is similar to level in other role-playing games and denotes how powerful a character is versus another character). I believe that the Danger Room rules are actually perfect for playing solo sessions of the Marvel Multiverse RPG.
Solo role-playing involves a single player acting as their own game master in order to enjoy a role-playing game without the need of other people being present. A lot of solo role-playing systems exist that involve using random rolling tables to add unpredictability and structure that would otherwise be the responsibility of the game master to maintain. The Danger Room rules found in the Marvel Multiverse RPG X-Men Expansion can be easily used as a solo role-playing system.
All you have to do is follow these steps (Assuming that you have access to the Marvel Multiverse RPG X-Men Expansion):
Create a Marvel Multiverse character to play as, or select an existing character from one of the many Marvel Multiverse gamebooks available.
Set the danger level of the Danger Room relative to your character’s rank.
Decide whether or not you want to play “Victory Mode“ or “Endless Mode“
In Victory Mode: You continue playing until your character overcomes a number of obstacles equal to their rank or is incapacitated.
In Endless Mode: You continue playing until your character is incapacitated.
Roll a random setting for the Danger Room (Determining the imagined aesthetic of the environment and obstacles) or make up your own.
Roll a number of obstacles for you to overcome equal to your character’s rank on the obstacles rolling table (If in Endless Mode, you can roll for one obstacle and then roll again after you overcome that obstacle).
Follow the rules for how to overcome each type of obstacle, completing one obstacle at a time using the skills and abilities of your character.
Feel free to role-play while overcoming obstacles in order to form your own exciting narrative around the adventure.
Conclude the session either after you’ve defeated a number of obstacles equal to your rank, or after your character has been incapacitated, with an exciting narrative conclusion born from your imagination.
